Information issues at all levels of government are currently in a state of flux. The rise of information and communication technologies, the moves toward an increasingly wired society, the social shifts as a result of all this combined with most governments operating in a different culture, have all had an impact on access to information and privacy issues. While more government information than ever is being both accessed by the public and shared between governments, there are continually evolving issues.
Reform of both the Access to Information and Privacy Acts continues to be on the agenda. At the provincial level health information and privacy issues are subject to ongoing debate and possible legislative initiatives. On the national landscape privacy is moving very much to centre stage for many people. Many alternatives to ensuring the individual's privacy is being protected are being considered, including legislation.
The entrances to government are being opened wider and wider, especially with the growth of web sites and the opportunities to access information quickly. But with all these changing environments have come some very crucial and important issues. Approaches to the handling of documents under Access to Information and Privacy, at the federal and provincial level, have been the subject of different inquiries, including the Westray Mine disaster and the Somalia affair. All of this has put ATIP under pressure. We are in a time of major transition in our society and the nature of democracy is taking on new and expanded meanings. The right of access to information continues to play a key role in all this.
This two day seminar will bring together a group of information and privacy professionals from all levels of government, the private sector and public interest groups, who will grapple with many of these issues. Your input will be encouraged in this two day session and time will be made available for questions and answers from the audience.
